Hazelnuts are nuts with endless properties for our health, although you should remember that they are very high in calories. Therefore, we should always eat them in moderation in order to take advantage of their many benefits such as:

  • They're high vitamin E content and therefore, it is an antioxidant food that prevents cell aging.
  • The fats in hazelnuts are unsaturated, so they will help lower our cholesterol levels.
  • Their amino acids improve our heart health and protect it against heart disease.
  • They are a source of fiber, so they can be good for constipation.

Although they can be eaten raw, it is also common to roast hazelnuts and obviously they always will be much richer if we roast them ourselves at home instead of buying roasted ones.

To do this, the first thing we need to do is to shell the hazelnuts in order to remove the hard shell that surrounds them. To do this, we can use a nutcracker or hit them carefully with a hammer or any other tool, and always place a chopping board underneath to avoid damaging the surface where we are working.

Once we have shelled all the hazelnuts - although we can keep their thin skin on - we place them on a baking tray and preheat the oven to about 180°C (356°F). It is important that the nuts aren't too close together, but well-spaced out so that they can all be roasted evenly. If you want to roast a lot of hazelnuts, we recommend you don't do them all at once.

When the oven is ready, you can put the tray in and let the hazelnuts roast for approximately 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, open the oven and carefully shake the tray a little and put it back in the oven for another 5-10 minutes.

And that's it! You see, once you take them out of the oven, you will be easily able to remove the thin brown shell covering the hazelnuts.

See how simple it is to roast hazelnuts in the oven, now all you need to do is roll up your sleeves and enjoy this rich nut.
