Crispy chocolate malteser cake
The first cake decorating hack is perfect for sprucing up a basic chocolate cake and will leave you with a decadent-looking, crispy chocolate malteser cake. To start, you can use a store-bought chocolate cake, but if you want to make it yourself, you can find a recipe here to make a chocolate cake from scratch.
To decorate the cake you will need:
- 1 bag of Maltesers
- Chocolate ganache
You can use store-bought ganache, or you can make your own chocolate ganache. Start by cutting the the cake horizontally in half. Using a spatula, spread chocolate ganache on top of both layers. Then, using a knife, cut the maltesers into halves and sprinkle them over the wet ganache. For a more rustic look you can crumble the maltesers in a ziplock bag using a rolling pin or something similar. Then stack top cake layer over the bottom and sprinkle a few more maltesers on top and there you will have a crispy chocolate malteser cake!
Rustic naked cake
Giving a basic cake a rustic naked cake look is another easy way to make a simple cake look decadent. This decoration will work perfectly for an easy vanilla sponge cake, or if you're feeling a little more fancy, a condensed milk cake. You can use one simple vanilla sponge cake, or you can use two or three and layer them.
For this you will need:
- White ganache icing
- Fresh or fake decorating flowers
Again, store-bought ganache is fine, but you can also make your own white chocolate ganache at home.
Spread the ganache thickly over each layer and stack them on top of each other. Then, use a spatula to spread the ganache that has spilled over the edge of the cake to thinly cover the sides. You should be able to see the cake underneath. It should look like a first coat of paint on a wall. If you use multiple layers, use much more ganache in between the layers to create an icing layers between the cake. After that, simply arrange some flowers on top and you will have a country-feel, rustic naked cake.
Marshmallow mess cake
The marshmallow mess cake is super simple, you can whip it up in a few minutes! To transform a simple chocolate or vanilla sponge cake into a marshmallow mess cake you will need:
- Chocolate or white chocolate ganache
- 1 packet of marshmallows
All you have to do to make this simple cake look decadent is spread the ganache over all sides of the cake and pile on the marshmallows! If that seems a bit too easy, you can always up your game by making a marshmallow fondant instead of ganache.
Black forest cake
Black forest cake, also known as Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, is a traditional German cake. Traditionally, it has several layers of chocolate sponge cake filled in between with whipped cream and cherries. But here's a simple version of a black forest cake that still looks just as impressive. For this simple but decadent looking black forest cake you will need:
- Chocolate sponge cake
- Whipped cream
- Cherries (fresh or glacé)
- Dark chocolate (optional)
Use any basic chocolate sponge cake recipe that you prefer. Start by cutting the sponge in half horizontally and cover each later with whipped cream. Store-bought cream will do, but you can also make whipped cream from scratch. Place one layer on top of the other and cover the top of the cake with more cream. Line the edges of the top of the cake with cherries. You can use fresh cherries, glacéd cherries, or both - whatever you prefer! We also recommend grating some dark chocolate over the top of the cake using a cheese grater or potato peeler to give you those fine flakes of dark chocolate. If you like, try using chocolate with a high cocoa percentage. Not only does dark chocolate have more health benefits, but the bitterness of the cocoa will balance out the sweetness of the cherries and cream and richness of the chocolate cake.
Almond buttercream cake
Last but not least - you can make a simple cake look decadent by turning it into an almond buttercream cake. To do this, you can use a basic vanilla sponge cake. The ingredients you will need to decorate it are:
- Slivered almonds
- Buttercream icing
- Cooking chocolate
To begin decorating an almond buttercream cake, preheat your oven to 180°C. Spread the slivered almonds onto a tray lined with baking paper and bake them in the oven for about 3-4 minutes or until they are golden and crunchy. Meanwhile, spread the buttercream around the cake evenly with a spatula. The icing should be half a centimetre thick. When your almonds are finished roasting and have completely cooled down, coat the cake with the almonds. For the sides use your hands to get the almonds sticking to the buttercream. As a finishing touch, melt some cooking chocolate and use a spoon to drizzle it over the top.
