How to Make a Hamdog
Are you a fan of both the hamburger and the hot dog alike? If the answer is yes, then you no longer need to choose from one of the two at a time. You can have both in the form of a hamdog. Yes, you read it right. A hamdog is an Australian cuisine invention, which is the result of the combination of a hamburger and a hot dog, with a regular patty, in addition to a hot dog sausage going right through the middle of it. Rather than a hamburger or a hot dog, it looks more like an alien spaceship. At present, it is offered in the menus of some Australian restaurants only, but it is quickly gaining popularity and entering many foreign markets as well. If you don’t have easy access to a hamdog as of now, you can make it on your own at home too. Read this oneHOWTO article to know how to make a hamdog.
First of all, you need to make a beef patty just like a way you would make for a hamburger. To make it for your hamdog, take your ground chuck and heat your grill on medium high.
Make equal size balls with your meat. Make sure that you do not overwork it, or it will become tough and dry.
Use your hands to flatten the balls and make patties that should be around ¾ inches thick. Also press the patty from sides and the top so that it remains evenly thick all round.
Make a shallow well in the center of each patty using your fingers. This is to prevent over-plumping.
Make four patties, season with pepper and salt, and cut each patty into two halves.
Apply some oil on the grill grate with the help of a paper towel or tongs. Do not spray, as it may create a flare-up.
Cook the patties with the well facing up. It should ideally take around 4-5 minutes. Don’t flatten or press the patty. Flip over and cook for another 4-5 minutes to cook both sides.
Now you have to prepare the sausages. Although there are several ways of cooking a sausage, the best, healthiest and most favored method is to boil them. To do that, take a large saucepan, fill it with around 1 liter of water and let it boil on high heat. Make sure that your pan is large enough to accommodate 1 liter of water freely. A gap of around 2 inches at the rim should still be left after filling the water.
Once the water has boiled, immerse the hot dog sausages in it so that they are fully covered with water. You can use a pair of tongs to slip in the hot dog sausages smoothly one by one.
Let the sausages simmer in the boiling water. Turn the flame low and keep simmering. For how long you let the sausages simmer depends on how cooked you want your sausages to be. It may range from 3 to 6 minutes, depending on your personal preference. If you want a softer sausage, simmer for 3-4 minutes, and if you want it crispier, simmer it for 6 minutes.
Once you are satisfied with the sausages, remove them from water and keep aside.
Take a hamdog bun, remove its upper part, and put the two halves of a patty in the semi circle parts. If you don't have buns with a hamdog shape (which may well be the case) we advise you to make your own bread with the hamdog bun shape beforehand.
Now put the sausage in the middle part of the bun, the longer part that is designed to accommodate it.
You can add as many ingredients as you like in a hamburger, including lettuce, pickles, tomato, cheese and your favorite sauces such as barbecue sauce.
Now add the upper part of the bun and relish. You can heat the bun if you don’t like it cold or at room temperature. This recipe will make four hamdogs. Serve with your favorite sauce.
