How to make Gulab Jamun at home with Milk Powder
Gulab Jamun is one of the most delicious and popular dessert of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. Gualb means rose which is given due to the rose flavor which is imparted from rose syrup and Jamun is a deep purple fruit and it denotes the dark outer color. It is traditionally made by thickening or reducing milk to form khoya and then rolling up the khoya to form small round balls. It is then deep fried and the fried balls are soaked in sugary syrup. It is usually eaten during festivals, weddings or birthday parties. In this article we will know how to make Gulab Jamun at home with milk powder.
The first step to make Gulab Jamun is to prepare the Mawa or khoya. Put all the butter in a pan and then melt it. Mix the milk powder in lukewarm water. Add milk to the pan and mix it well in a medium flame. When they are mixed, add the milk powder and stir it continuously. Stir the mixture and cook until it gets thick. When the texture becomes smooth turn off the flame and put the mixture in a separate bowl. Your mawa is ready.
Preparing the Stuffing
Peel the cardamom and ground it into powder. Cut the pistachios and cashews in small fine pieces. In a small bowl take 1 tablespoon of mawa, 1-2 teaspoons of milk powder, half of the cardamom powder and the diced pistachios and cashews. Mix them well to prepare the stuffing.
Preparing the Sugar syrup
In a saucepan or pan put 2 cups of sugar. Then pour 1 cup of water in it and cook it on medium flame. Cook it till the sugar dissolves completely. To check whether the sugar syrup is ready or not take out a few drops of the syrup and hold it between the thumb and finger. It should feel gooey in texture. Bring the finger away from thumb if one thin thread of the syrup forms then it is ready. Add the cardamom powder to the syrup and mix well.
Preparing the Mawa Balls
In the mawa that we had taken out earlier, add 4 teaspoons of maida. Then knead it to get a smooth texture. Kneading it for 6-7 minutes will make it smooth and soft. Take a small amount of mixture in one hand and then flatten it. Place a small amount of stuffing in between. Then roll it to cover the stuffing and form a round ball.
Preparing the fried Gulab Jamun
Preheat oil in a deep frying pan. Now put the mawa balls into the hot oil. While frying the balls don’t touch them with the ladle. Take out the fried balls and place them on a paper napkin. After 1-2 minutes, put the balls in sugar syrup. After 5 – 6 hours take out the sweet gulab jamuns from the syrup and enjoy.
