How to Make Moong ki Daal

Moong ki dal, or yellow dal, is an Indian healthy comfort food made from yellow split lentil and several spices. Rich in protein, this dal is a staple food in the country, serving as a major source of protein among vegetarian individuals. Some people do not like this dal because of its bland taste, but trust me, this recipe at has several flavours of garam masala, garlic, tempered cumin, red chilli powder and turmeric. Easy to digest, serve this dal with Indian roti or rice, and have a healthy wholesome meal. Let us see how to make this Indian moong ki dal

Between 30 & 45 minutes medium difficulty
Steps to follow to make this recipe:

Wash dal in clean water, and keep it soaked for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, drain the water


Transfer the dal in a 3 litre pressure cooker. Add 1 1/2 cups water, salt and turmeric powder to it, close the lid and let it pressure cook on for 2 whistles, on medium flame.

Turn off the flame, let the pressure come down naturally, and then open the lid


Now, heat the cooking oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle. Then add crushed garlic, dry red chilli, chopped green chillies, grated ginger and curry leaves to it. Let them saute for 20-30 seconds


Add tomato (diced) to the pan and let it cook for 50-60 seconds. Then, add coriander powder and red chilli powder, and mix all


Take it off from the flame, and pour it on the cooked dal. Check salt, and add more if needed


Add 1/3 cup water and lemon juice, mix well and let it boil for 3 minutes. Then turn the flame off, and transfer to a serving bowl.


Garnish with chopped coriander leaves, and serve with plain roti or steamed rice, and papad. You can eat with either pulao or favorite type of rice, some delicious homemade naan and some vishu katta for desert for the perfect meal if you prefer.
