Mushrooms are a delicious and nutritious product that is low in calories and is suitable for accompanying main courses or for being simply grilled or boiled. Furthermore, mushrooms can remain in the fridge for up to a week if kept correctly and can give us ideas for more than one meal. But this is only possible if you store them correctly. Wrongly stored, mushrooms can get spoiled within a pair of days. Firstly, to keep mushrooms fresh we should remove any plastic in which they are usually sold in the supermarket. If you have bought a tray of mushrooms wrapped in plastic, remove the packaging. Plastic causes the mushrooms to rot more quickly.

If you're not going to consume the mushrooms on the day that you bought them, to keep them in good condition do not wash them before storing them in the fridge. What you can do is to take off any earth with a paper towel or a brush but don't soak them in water.

The next step is to take a paper bag and put the mushrooms in it. What we can also do to keep mushrooms fresh is to include a few sprigs of parsley in the paper bag. Parsley acts as an antioxidant and prevents dark spots on the mushrooms. Remember to never use plastic. Put the mushrooms in the coldest part of the fridge.

When you want to consume the mushrooms you should take them out of the fridge and wash them to remove any earth that still remains. Before cooking them, remember to drain them well so that they don't lose too much water when being cooked.

If you prefer, you can also preserve mushrooms, this way they will last much longer.

If you have a lot of mushrooms and you think you'll be unable to finish them within a week, you can also freeze them. Before freezing the mushrooms, you must cook them or boil them in water for around one minute. After this, remove the mushroom from the water and drain thorouhgly. Put the mushrooms on cookie sheets and leave them in the freezer for about 40 minutes. When the mushrooms are finally frozen, remove them from the freezer, put them into bags and back inside the freezer again. If you don't cook the mushrooms previous to putting them on the freezer, they might liquefy upon thawing.
