How to increase the life of fish in the fridge

Refrigeration is very important, when it comes to keeping the fish fresh and eatable. According to experts, fish should be stored in fridge, and be consumed within 2 days of purchase. If not, tightly wrap it in foil, plastic wrap or freezer paper, and store in the freezer. The temperature of the refrigerator should be lower than 40˚ F (4.5˚C). If the temperature is more than that, it should be consumed within 2 hours of storage. However, cooked fish can last up to 4 days in the fridge.

If you have caught the fish on your own, place it in a plastic cooler that contains plenty of ice. Leave its drain hole open, so that water can escape with the melting of the ice.

Things to take care of

While buying fish, look for the one that is already properly refrigerated in the store or the fish market. Make sure that it is directly stored on ice or in a professional refrigeration unit only, and that the establishment practices safe and hygienic methods of food handling. The fish that you buy should have a fresh and mild smell, and its eyes should be clear and bulge only slightly. The flesh should be glistening and firm, and should spring back when you press it. If you are buying a whole fish, it should not have any body slime, and its gills should be bright red in color. Do not buy a piece that looks dull, and smells fishy, sour or like ammonia.
