How to cook Textured Vegetable Protein - Tips & Recipes
Soy has become a staple of our diet in recent years . Rich in protein and low in fat, it is ideal for eating healthily and staying in shape. One option is textured vegetable protein (TVP), which serves as a meat substitute because of its texture and composition. You'll be able to make a lot of varied dishes with it. TVP can be purchased at any specialist shop. It comes wrapped in plastic packages to protect it from moisture. It cannot be used as it is, but must be hydrated with water or, if you want to enrich it more, with stock (1 cup of soy for 2 cups of water).
To do so, add two cups of TVP in a saucepan and add the same amount of hot water while you stir. Keep stirring on medium head until the TVP has soaked all the water.
Once you go through this process, TVP becomes like minced beef.
Once the soy is hydrated, for many it is the equivalent of minced chicken meat, you can create a multitude of dishes with it. It is only a matter of imagining and mixing. It is advisable to mix it only with vegetables and cereals because it has such a high amount of protein, that it would be very strong and would lose all its flavour with meat or fish.
Make sure the TVP is totally dry before using it. You can put kitchen paper on a plate so it absorbs the water.
You can make soy chunks using the traditional recipe. The only difference is you'll have to replace the meat with TVP. You already know - flour, water and egg.
Add some soy milk in a bowl and bread crumbs. Press two cloves of garlic and parsley to give the balls more taste. Add your TVP and mix well until you get a consistent paste.
Now it's time to create the chunks. The best way to make them is with your own hands. Once they're done, roll them in flour and fry them in a pan with very hot oil. Once they're done, place them on a plate with absorbing paper so it can soak all the oil up.
Then you can accompany them with a vegetable or tomato sauce to enjoy your soy chunks.
Following the guidelines above (Instruction 1), you can also make soy burgers. Add a soft vegetable that you consider appropriate for the mix to the previous mixture. Some ideas include chickpeas, artichoke, carrot...
Make the dough, give it shape and you just have to put it on the frying pan. You can add the accompaniment you want.
You can create your special cannelloni with TVP. Instead of using meat, add this. You can also add TVP as a supplement to your vegetable cannelloni. It's ideal for a diet and full of healthy nutrient inputs. It is also applicable for lasagne or pasta in general.
Use it in a natural way to add to your salads. It is also delicious cold and uncooked. Along with lettuce, pasta or rice (among other salad possibilities) and all the vegetables and / or nuts that you like, you will get a delicious dish.
In any dish where you would normally add meat to, you can substitute it for TVP. From potatoes, pasta (you can make a vegan bolognese), rice, vegan burritos, directly grilled, with vegetables, salads, etc.
