A Halal snack pack, short form HSP, is a genial pile of sauces, chips and kebab meat. It consists of halal certified doner kebab, typically beef or lamb, chips, and sauces like chili, barbecue and garlic. Jalapeno peppers, yogurt, hummus and cheese may also be added for some extra flavor. Although it originated in Australia, its creators were European and Middle Eastern immigrants. Traditionally served in Styrofoam containers, this has become a staple dish in almost every Australian kebab takeaway shop. Sometimes, it is also referred to as a mixed plate or a snack box. ‘Halal snack pack’ became the ‘People’s Choice Word of the Year’ in 2016. Tips

  • When it comes to a halal snack pack, crispy is the key. The chips must be cooked enough to stay crispy even when covered in meat, sauces and cheese. Do not forget to sprinkle chicken salt on them, as this is one of the most sought after late night condiments
  • The cheese should be enough and should be placed in all the right places, including over the chips, mixed with the chips, and under the meat. Most importantly, it should melt and become soft
  • The variety of meat you apply over the chips is very important. Preferred ones are mixed meat with lamb, chicken or sometimes beef. In some cases, chicken may also be used, just to give a different touch and feel to the dish. The ratio of the meat to that of chips is also crucial
  • The application and selection of the sauces is an important defining attribute as well. The garlic sauce, chili sauce and barbecue sauce are ideal, but you may also choose from hummus, tomato and sweet chili. Whichever sauce you choose, make sure to apply it liberally
