The first thing you must do to prepare steamed potatoes without a steamer is to wash them well under running water to remove any dirt and debris. Bear in mind that steamed potatoes can be cooked both as whole pieces or as slices, it all depends on your individual preferences. If you would like to present them in slices, remove the skin with a knife or peel it off and give them the shape you prefer, ensuring that they are roughly the same size so they cook evenly.

How to Steam Potatoes without a Steamer - Step 1

Once you have prepared the potatoes, put one pot or saucepan with water on the heat. If you want to scent the water with which you'll be cooking the potatoes, you can add a glass of white wine and maybe a bay leaf, this will give your potatoes a delicious aroma. Then, you should set a colander just above the pot. It must fit well and be large enough so that the water reaches boiling point but does not touch the potatoes.

When the water starts to boil, place the potatoes in the colander and cover them with a lid that fits snugly, if you don't have a lid, use a ceramic plate that fits. This will ensure that the potatoes do well and it prevents steam from escaping.

Leave the potatoes to cook and steam for at least 20 minutes. After this time, remove the lid and see if they are tender by carefully poking and stabbing them with a fork. If your steamed potatoes are ready, remove them and serve. Before serving, you can add salt and pepper and maybe even sprinkle on some parsley.
