In this article we'd like to show you how to make a basic curry sauce from scratch. This one is an easy-to-prepare sauce and is very useful to accompany with vegetables, rice, fish or meat.
You'll need:
- 50 gr of butter (1.8 oz)
- 1 chopped onion
- 1 peeled tomato
- 1 peeled and chopped apple
- 1 bouquet garni
- 1 teaspoonful of curry powder
- 1 spoonful of vegetable broth
- 1 - 1.5 tbsp all-purpose flour
- Salt/pepper
- A pan
Steps to follow:
Pour some butter or ghee in a frying pan and let it heat up to start preparing the curry sauce. This step is essential as the fat acts as a base to enhance the flavors of the spices you will add later.
When the frying pan is properly heated, add the chopped onions, tomato and a finely chopped bouquet garni, and leave it to cook on low heat. This allows the ingredients to release their natural flavors, creating a rich foundation for the curry.
Next, you'll have to add flour, vegetable broth and the curry powder to the frying pan and keep stirring for approximately 5 minutes. This helps in thickening the sauce while evenly distributing the spices.
After this time has passed, take the pan off the heat and sieve the mix so you can season the curry sauce as you wish. Sieving ensures a smooth texture by removing any lumps or large pieces of ingredients.
To finish your basic curry sauce, you have to add a peeled and chopped apple in small pieces, and cook it again all together for a couple more minutes. The apple adds a subtle sweetness and depth to the sauce. Isn´t it easy to make a basic curry sauce?
