Plain savoury scone
As you may know, the most basic of all savoury scones is also the easiest to make. Having a plain scone means you can pair it with absolutely any filling or scone topping you can imagine. Take a look at this recipe and its delicious filling ideas.
Ingredients
- 15.8 oz self raising flour
- 5.3 oz butter
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cup of milk
- 1 pinch of salt
Preparation
The first step is to pre-heat the oven at Gas 6 or 200 degrees celcius (400 fahrenheit). Process the flour and butter until blended. Pour in a bowl and make a hole in the middle. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, milk and salt. Pour this mixture in the hole you've created and mix all the ingredients until you get a dry dough.
Next, split the dough into 3 equal parts and press them until flat. knead slightly and make sure the dough is around 2.50 centimeters (1 inch) thick. Get a glass and cut out circles. Place them upside down on a baking tray (with a baking sheet so they don't stick) and brush them lightly with milk. Bake for 15 minutes until brown.
Filling
As we've mentioned, any fillings go with this simple recipe. Some of the best fillings for savoury scones, in this case, include vegemite and cream cheese, umami paste, herbed butter, pesto and grated Parmesan or Goat's cheese with some sun-dried tomatoes on top.
Cheese and bacon scones
One of the most loved savoury scones are cheese and bacon scones. The procedure to make them does not differ very much from plain scones, you just have to add these extra ingredients that will give your scones some extra flavour at the appropriate time. Take a look.
Ingredients
- 15.8 oz self raising flour
- 5.3 oz butter
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cup of milk
- 1 pinch of salt
- 3 slices of bacon without rind
- 3.5 oz cheddar cheese
Preparation
The fist step to make cheese and bacon scones is to cook the slices of bacon in a frying pan until golden. Line them on paper until cool. Next, follow the instructions you'll find in the first paragraph of the recipe above to make the dough. Once you have split the dough in 3 parts and pressed them, cut the slices of bacon and shred the cheese. Sprinkle them evenly on all three parts. Knead until perfectly mixed. Flatten them out until you get a 2.5 centimeter (1 inch) thickness and cut out the pieces with a glass. Put them upside down on a baking sheet and tray and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until they have completely risen.
Filling
The best ingredient to fill these scones with is butter, especially if you eat them warm, as the butter will melt inside and will give a delicious texture. Another great option to fill your scones with is pesto, tomato jam or mustard too.

- 2 oz sun-dried tomatoes

As these are like plain scones, there are plenty of options for you to fill this vegan scone. A great idea is to cut up some fresh tomatoes and avocado. Another idea is to spread some delicious hummus or olive patè.
